Course Schedule

Core Course: Destination Leadership:

The Team as People and Fiscal Managers: The necessary knowledge and ability to provide strategic human resource and fiscal leadership, and the development of a strong work team and financial management system in destination organizations. Primary focus is on:

  • Organizational visioning, goal setting process, and destination performance assessments
  • Strategic destination human resources issues that include: 
    • Leadership styles and priorities that include staff motivation and rewards
    • Team building and communications
  • Destination crisis management 
  • DMO fiscal responsibilities:
    • Financial statements and interpretation
    • Cost control systems  
    • Program budgeting and cost control systems

Elective Course: Destination Sales & Services Management:

Sales and services are important integral components of doing effective destination marketing. For senior DMO decision makers, this course discussion will center on advanced sales and services strategy formulation, capabilities and resource deployment across targeted group/meeting and leisure travel segments. The need for an integrated and supportive destination marketing, sales and services function is explored through appropriate organization setup, people development and accountability. Seasoned industry sales and services practitioners will moderate and bring new strategic insights to executing successful sales and services programming.

Elective Course: Development of the Destination Experience:

Branded destination experiences are closely aligned to new and/or enhanced visitor product development.  DMOs are increasingly involved in enriching the community tourism experience and are expected to have a meaningful role in its development and delivery. What are the challenges, trends, roles and responsibilities and typical activities of a DMO in becoming a competent destination manager? This interactive course will use case studies and examples to illustrate the importance of being a more active and influential tourism development leader.
