Business Events Sydney Honored With DMAI’s Inaugural Destination Marketing Humanitarian Award
Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) has honored Business Events Sydney with its inaugural Destination Marketing Humanitarian Award. This prestigious award is given to a destination marketing organisation (DMO) that demonstrates significant leadership and support of its community. Business Events Sydney was recognised for their efforts to serve as a pillar in driving the evolution of destination marketing and its impact on local communities.
To date, the business event sector has been evaluated primarily on its contributions to the tourism sector. The tourism contributions have been impressive in themselves; however, the narrow focus has failed to account for a more extensive set of contributions to economies and communities.
“Business Events Sydney's (BESydney) Beyond Tourism Benefits research proved that the international norm to evaluate the lucrative business events sector in tourism terms alone, overlooks perhaps the most valuable legacies – the many educational, intellectual, trade and investment outcomes from business events,” said Michael Gehrisch, President and CEO of DMAI. “These efforts have helped showcase events as valuable knowledge economy drivers, as well as tourism drivers, which have a vital role to play in the government’s aligned economic development strategy.”
Business Events Sydney's research demonstrated that events deliver long-term benefits such as the ability to increase professional knowledge, improve local education offerings and career opportunities, disseminate the latest technical practices, forge international networks, drive research and business collaboration, profile industry issues, lead to social change, and more.
“BESydney has worked extremely hard over the past few years to increase the understanding of business events and their legacies, and to continually build on the credibility and standing of our industry both here in Australia and globally,” CEO of BESydney, Lyn Lewis-Smith said. “Receiving this inaugural award is one of the highlights of 2014. It is an honour and a privilege to be recognised by one of our leading global associations.”
