DMAI’s Meeting Professionals Advisory Board Inaugural Meeting

In just one week, DMAI will be convening some of the brightest minds in the meetings industry that have agreed to serve on our industry’s first advisory board.  While many DMOs (more than 20, at my last count) have their own advisory boards, what’s cool about this board is the focus on us, the DMO industry.

 The primary purpose of the board is to examine the issues and opportunities surrounding the present and future value proposition of DMOs as the preferred partner for meeting professionals and any party influencing meetings.  Bottom line: we are looking for their advice and perspective on how the industry could improve its effectiveness as a valuable business partner.

Our first meeting will be hosted by the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau and The Omni Dallas Hotel, on September 25-26.  Representing DMAI’s Sales and Marketing Committee (SMC), the meeting will be attended by Scott White, President and CEO, Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau and SMC Board Liaison, and Rachel Benedick, Senior Vice President of Sales, Visit Denver and SMC Vice-Chair.

While the first meeting will include an orientation to DMAI and DMAI’s meeting industry products, such as empowerMINT, Event Impact Calculator, and Destinations Showcase, the majority of the time will be spent discussing their perspective on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to the DMO industry. We ask them to consider, if they were us, what strategic initiatives would they undertake to address the current state? In addition, other sessions will include the industry’s Room Demand Study, Event Marketing, and the Changing Role of the DMO Sales Professional.

Then stay tuned to future Convention Sales Insider editions as we begin to share their input.  Plus, there will be a special session specifically on the changing role of the DMO sales professionals at Convention Sales Forum in December based on our dialogue with the new advisory board.  For the more progressive DMOs, you won’t want to miss out on this conversation!
